Discover the best-kept secrets in Armenia – Street art in Yerevan

Discover the best-kept secrets in Armenia.

The rebellious spirit of contemporary art and street art, in particular, has slowly spread in Yerevan. Yerevan city was once called an open-air showroom and “the pink city” because it owned so many museums and iconic pink buildings (yes, besides Jaipur in India, it’s Armenia’s Yerevan known as the pink city, named for the color of the stone used for construction).

Now, it has taken modern art by storm! If you take a closer look at even the smallest passages, slightly dark underpasses, or the most unsightly buildings, there might be marvelous artwork waiting for you.

From portraits of famous writers to 3D art, the streets of Yerevan have a welcoming and cheerful painting of street art. Such art aims to brighten the city by making people beam more often and giving its citizens a handful of colors. These roads look like they just came out of a fairy tale; they come as an antidote to the casual boredom of the workweek. But, most importantly, street art also helps artists to convey their messages, be they political or otherwise.

Street art in Yerevan: City arches

Urban turns are an essential part of any city. In Yerevan the hooks are not just common and dirty passages – they are real works of art. And the thing is that not so long ago, the city mayor’s office launched a project of large-scale renovation and upgrading of urban places.

Street art in Yerevan: Graffiti

Lately, the name of the young Armenian painter Robert Nikoghosyan became known to many residents of Yerevan. That’s due to his unique graffiti creations that decorate the walls of buildings in the capital.

Graffiti is a modern art form, which is not very popular and widespread in Armenia. That is why his works attracted a lot of attention. And they got large-scale honor because of the chosen theme – the artist draws prominent and well-known Armenians and introduces young people and tourists to the Armenian ancestry.

So, the next time you are walking through Yerevan streets, observe out for a surprise around the corner. It may be a construction in the city center covered by a fantastic painting, or a tiny illustration of someone special on a wall lost somewhere in Bangladesh, a small, remote region in Yerevan! Just keep in mind, like any other form of art, street art can give birth to revolutions, too!
